Home and garden beyond home improvement

When someone says “home and garden”, what do you think of? Is it home improvement, or some show about a home improvement show? Is it remodeling, flower gardening, or maybe curtain selection? Certainly, all of these things are a part of the home and garden experience, but they are not the complete experience. To get the bigger picture, we need to look beyond home improvement projects, and see the big picture of the expanded landscape, and the importance of maintenance.

The big picture

In the wider landscape of life, there are details that escape most home and garden websites and magazines, such as the larger part of the landscape if you own property that extends beyond the rooms of your home, and the immediate landscape. There are pastures, there are ponds and lakes, there are drives and roadways and fences to be built and maintained. Learning how to solve these perplexing problems is just as important as the color of the curtains, or the finish on the fixtures. Not only that, but these things must all be maintained at an acceptable level for longevity and proper function. The two most ignored part of the home and garden, are the wider landscape, and maintenance.

Home and garden maintenance

Homes require constant maintenance, even after the bathroom has been remodeled with the newest types of foreign tile, or the kitchen has been upgraded with granite counter tops. Then there is the garden part of home management, which goes on long after the landscape designer and the landscape installation crew are gone. It must all be maintained.

In the long run, the things you do to maintain the parts of your property outside your home are just as important as the work you do to maintain the inside of your home, although they may not be as immediately evident. Not only does the broad landscape of your property effect the aesthetics of your property, and it’s value, but also it’s structural integrity, and concerns such as pest control. Everything on your property is a part of the whole, and interacts in complicated, but predictable ways. Maintaining every part is important for that relationship.

Home and garden interactions

The types of plants you choose will have an impact on pests and pest control, the way you maintain the large areas of grass in your lawn will effect the numbers and types of insects that may want to eat those landscape plants. Your outdoor lighting choices will largely determine whether you will have moles in your lawn, the placement and maintenance of trees can effect such diverse areas as fire safety, roof damage, communications and power lines, foundation problems, septic systems, and insect populations. Everything in your home and wider landscape interacts with everything else, and knowing how those interactions occur, and how to maximize the good, while preventing problems should be your goal.
