Fly Control Preventing Flies
Pest Control Fly Prevention
Flies have always been a nuisance to people and animals. They are troublesome, irritating, and they carry disease. The irritation factor can even cause weight loss in farm animals. Solomon noticed them enough to say that: “Dead flies make the ointment stink.” Solomon wasn't the only ancient person to notice flies, but some did not share his disdain for the creatures.
Flies and ancient peoples
The ancient Phonecians thought that flies were the primal form of life, and elevated them to god like status. A sea coast people, wherever they saw rotting fish, and filth, flies seemed to rise up from it. They even developed a rudimentary religion based on this ancient version of spontaneous generation, and they named their god ofter the creatures. In ancient Phonecian, the word for flies was zebub, the term for Lord, or Master was Baal, the Phonecian god was therefore called Baalzebub, the god of the flies.
Flies and disease
Beyond the religious connections, and the nuisance factor, there is a serious connection to flies and the spread of disease. The usefulness of flies in nature seems to be limited to the breakdown of carrion and feces, both of which are known to be high in bacteria. They then spread the bacteria to everything they touch. Keeping the fly population low is important to stopping the spread of disease.
Fly prevention
In spite of the reverence these ancient worshipers may have had for the fly, most modern people would prefer to avoid their presence. Here are a few things that you can do to control flies by practicing good fly pest control:
Excluding flies
Excluding flies from the home is simply a matter of sealing all holes and potential entries into the home. Take a look at the screens on your windows, if they fit poorly, have holes, or cuts, or are otherwise damaged repair or replace them. The same is true of screen doors. Adjust screen doors to close more quickly if possible.
Flies outdoors
The real problem is the outdoor problem. If they were not outdoors, they would not be coming inside to crawl across your sandwich and your tv screen. Doing something to prevent them from visiting your property to begin with will solve the problem.
Flies and pets
Flies like food, water, and shelter. Deprive them of these, and they go away. If you have pets, feeding more than they eat, will attract flies, their feces will also attract flies. Dog pens, because of the presence of the dogs, who themselves love the same things the flies love, will attract flies. Keep it as far from the home as possible, and keep it as clean as possible to prevent invasion. Please understand that if you have a dog or two in a pen near an entrance into your home, you will have flies in your home, in spite of your best efforts otherwise.
Flies and trash
Flies like rotting food, and other rotten materials. Keeping trash cans sealed, and well away from the home will help keep flies well away from your home as well. Keeping leftovers, and other food products that need to be discarded frozen until trash day will also help. Double bagging any wet trash may also help. Sometimes a few ounces of ammonia in the can can discourage flies, and of course, keeping cans clean helps as well.
Fly treatment
The problem of flies is serious enough that if prevention can not achieve control quickly, chemical treatment may be needed on a temporary basis. These should be used judiciously. Other methods of fly control and fly prevention, like baits, sticky strips, flashers, electronic devices, water bags, and other devices may have limited results, but nothing beats prevention for the control of flies.
